Pollution occurs at different levels and it doesn't just impact our planet it impacts all species, including mankind, who dwell on it. Earth is very good at recycling waste, but we are generating far more than earth can cope with. Unfortunately, humans are the most polluting species. Air-conditioning that keeps us warm in winter and comfortably cool in summer requires s a lot of energy.Transportation by fuel-guzzling land, water, and air vehicles is rapidly depleting the fossil fuels, in addition to causing air pollution.As we got used to more comforts, we yearned for still more. While greatly improving our quality of life, the industrial revolution that began in the 18th century marked the end of sustainable living.As Mahatma Gandhi put it, "Earth has enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed." From 1970 onwards, the world has been in an ecological overshoot our demand on environmental resources is exceeding the earth's supply capacity. The greater distance food items have to travel to reach the consumer, the greater that transportation's impact is on the environment.Įarth has a great capacity for regeneration.Waste generated in the farms and meat processing plants can affect the water quality in the area. Large scale farming of animals increases their susceptibility to diseases such as Mad-cow disease and avian flu, for example.Monoculture keeps cost of production low, but it reduces biodiversity and negatively impacts the soil. Removing trees and other plants to increase areas of cultivation causes habitat loss and threatens the survival of numerous species of animals and plants.Fertilizer run-offs cause toxic algal blooms that kill aquatic animals. Using chemical fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides to increase production actually pollutes the air, soil and water with toxic chemicals.There are many negative impacts associated with population explosion.
However, over exploitation and pollution have started affecting the environment negatively over the last few centuries.Īn increase in population makes excessive demands on natural resources, and increases the demand on agriculture and livestock. It's interesting to note that modern humans have been around for a very long time and lived for much of it without causing much irreparable damage to the environment.
